Also invocations and summons had to be performed in the right language and with the right references (analogy thinking and stuff)) One of the most effective languages was considered to be Hebrew since it was supposed to be close to the Henoch - while German, Italian, French, English, whatnotever were considered weak languages. Maybe Marian found a loophole... he's been quite the traveler. Maybe he found a way to combine medival magic, alchemy and Asian teachings...
