I bring fanart!
So yeah I was talking to
nitrojen and... for all that DGM has the Vatican and all, there hasn't been any overt references to Jesus. :>
Or maybe there have been and I'm being slow in the brain.
The whole stigmata idea. I think it sort of fits Kanda, seeing as how he keeps resurrecting himself. ):

=D Bloody Kanda, great!
as far as I can tell there aren't any reference to jesus, but they do mention god, it sounds more like a general word, 'god' o..O I don't relate the word to any particular religion XD

ahhh... anyways I think that there were some references to the Christian religion like how Daisya and Yeagear were hung after they were killed, the fact that everyone constantly refers to god, I think Levvrier or someone like that said some weird things and the crosses that are EVERYWHERE in the manga- their uniforms, their buildings, the Noahs, etc.... and I think there was more but I can't remember it right now... It's kinda past midnight here though so I'll say the rest later when I'm not tired and I can remember things ^^;;

Therefore, this is amazing! *__* *makes grabby hands at it*

Japanese manga artists love crosses, angels, and God, in that order, but so far as I've seen, they have absolutely no understanding of theology. That's why you get hilarious manga setups like multiple incarnations of Noah, complete with stigmata and a giant computer/alternate universe-Ark, trying to destroy the world. Or angels who store their power in their hair and help the reincarnation of Joan of Arc fight as a magical girl for God (Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne). And don't even get me started on Angel Sanctuary (Tenshi Kinryouku), where the manga artist obviously did her research because of all the angel names and ranks, but still has a Heaven that resembles a giant military school in the sky. Nor is Christianity the only religion that gets scewed with. See CLAMP's RG Veda.
However, although the manga artists like messing with religion in many amusing ways and even making their main characters the next Messiah, they hardly ever mention Jesus. I've noticed that in a number of manga.
Mentions of Jesus or no, Allen is such a Christ figure.

Being completely irreverent and barely on topic, here, but... isn't Allen basically Vaudeville Jesus now? HE PLAYED PIANO FOR OUR SINS, TO HEAL THE WORLD; HE - okay I won't take that any farther now. But you're right, despite Allen's obvious Christ-figure status (even when taken seriously, it's there), we're yet to hear anything about the Christ.

ALWAYS XDDDD

And oh, AngelSanct. My first serious fandom love, what. Its interpretation of Heaven actually makes sense, when you consider how God was depicted as a vengeful God in certain parts of the Old Testament. He didn't give much room for non-believers, when you take that part of the Bible literally; it ws either follow, believe and repent, or He shall smite you. It's... not very appealing to listen to, when you're not exactly raised Catholic. ):
I also do think that Hoshino is at least familiar with the religion, more than the usual. One particular instance where my geeking comes up is from Mahoja's shirt in this chapter cover (http://www.onemanga.com/D.Gray-Man/76/); it's a reference of an actual pencil etching drawn by a Jesuit faithful whose name I can't remember for the life of me. This particular image - I think it was called "The Battered Hands" or something like it - is commonly used and printed on chapel service phamplets in all the Jesuit-maintained schools I've attended. There are also Jesuit schools in Japan that use that particular image on their service phamplets, too. I don't know if it's the same for other schools, but a priest once mentioned that it's supposed to represent the belief "men and women for others" because of the story behind it.
But aha, off-topic.
Basically I'm just really amused no one's ever mentioned Jesus yet.

V-vaudeville Jesus? Like... Jesus Christ Superstar Jesus?
Never mind that I haven't actually seen that yet ahahaI'm really amused no one's mentioned him yet, really.

What I meant was the lack of actual, in-your-face namedropping of key figures in the religion. Like Jesus.
Jesus is popular.

I liked Angel Sanctuary. It had such a crazy plot. I still need to finish reading it, actually. But if I recall correctly, wasn't God "sleeping" during the events of the manga? So much for omniscience.
I rather like how Rhode and the rest of the Noah Clan are vengeful Old Testament types, while Allen is a "Save everybody!" New Testament type. And it nearly makes sense to have the villains named after Noah, because it isn't a huge step from being the one of the only survivors of a cataclysm to actively causing said cataclysm. I still doubt that Hoshino understands theology. Using a religious image isn't necessarily the same thing as understanding theology, either. I love that chapter cover, though...and I wish Anita and Mahoja had survived. :(
Allen's "clown Jesus" theme is strikingly similar to the themes in a Japanese novel by Endo Shusaku, though. I really want to know if Hoshino consciously used the same imagery, or if it's just coincidence.

Also, aha I have one of his novels, sob. I never bothered reading past the first chapter, but then it's in English so meh.
