As for the cross itself, I got one of the probably bootlegged metal cross necklaces - as opposed to the pin-on badges, which are much larger - and cut off the loop at the top of the cross with wire cutters. (So that was cheating a little). They sell the necklaces on eBay. I ordered mine from China, and it wasn't very expensive.
I made the base out of craft wood from Michael's. I just cut out the basic shape on a thin sheet of wood, based on the pictures in Gray Ark and the measurements of the little metal cross. Then I cut pieces of a long, flat stick of craft wood to go around the edges, and wood-glued the lot together. Then I sanded it and painted the whole thing with acrylic paint. Finally, when the paint was dry, I super-glued the cross to it, then used spray-on finish on the whole thing.
