Kakkoi Con and Third Arc Kanda Cosplay

(Definitely forgot to x-post when I posted this on dgray_cosplay, even though I post here more. orz) Also...

...looks like I'm gonna have to make new!Mugen, and an overcoat. Because Kanda apparently wears a long coat, over his... long coat.

So has the story gotten around to winter now, or is he just an idiot? Whatever. I'll have burlap sack!Mugen at AnimeIowa next week, if anyone's going to that but me.

The sleeve buttons are cover buttons, the kind you can buy and then cover with fabric. I covered them with red satin, then drew the design on them with Prismacolor marker.

As for the buttons on the front of the jacket, I used huge plastic buttons for the bases, spraypainted them silver, and ran wire loops through the sewing-holes so I could attach them to the jacket later. Then I took the top halves of really big cover buttons and, instead of covering them with fabric, painted them with nail enamel (of all things). I hot-glued those to the big plastic buttons and touched up the paint a little, and voila.

Oh - the round badge was made the same way as the jacket-front buttons, only I used a big flat button for the base, and the "E" is acrylic paint instead of nail enamel.

As for the cross itself, I got one of the probably bootlegged metal cross necklaces - as opposed to the pin-on badges, which are much larger - and cut off the loop at the top of the cross with wire cutters. (So that was cheating a little). They sell the necklaces on eBay. I ordered mine from China, and it wasn't very expensive.

I made the base out of craft wood from Michael's. I just cut out the basic shape on a thin sheet of wood, based on the pictures in Gray Ark and the measurements of the little metal cross. Then I cut pieces of a long, flat stick of craft wood to go around the edges, and wood-glued the lot together. Then I sanded it and painted the whole thing with acrylic paint. Finally, when the paint was dry, I super-glued the cross to it, then used spray-on finish on the whole thing.

I made it out of wool gabardine. It's the same stuff a lot of men's suits are made of. :)
