Pretty Rave Girl

Author: Akaiouja

Title: Pretty Rave Girl

Disclaimer: I do not own D. Gray-man.

Summary: Komui thinks everyone needs a way to let off some steam and decides to build a rave for the use of the European Head Quarters. Like most of Komui's best laid plans, it goes great.

Author's Note: The video was written to the song "Pretty Rave Girl" by I Am X-Ray. It's excellent. The idea kind of snuck up on me while dancing in the rave at Otakon this past weekend. Give me the suspension of disbelieve and assume that they could have at a rave in the early 1900's. I'm sort of new in this fandom so any comments are appreciated! Thanks!

-------

Kanda was not hiding. He never hid from anything. It was against his nature and his principles. He was in a small store room in the Order Head Quarters basement because he was looking for... supplies. Not because he was hiding. The fact that Komui had decided that the European Branch staff was over and had spent the next several weeks brainstorming up some kind of "stress relieving" activity had nothing to do with it.

The perfect solution that Komui had decided upon was dancing, although Kanda noticed with an ounce of amusement that he had made sure Lenalee was out on a mission before announcing his new plan. As if Kanda's lack of enthusiasm about this new group activity had been anticipated, Komui had ordered everyone to at least "try it" since he and the science department had gone through the trouble of setting it up. It was little more than a simple room converted with a smooth floor and lots of speakers and flashing lights, but Komui had looked straight at Kanda the entire time he had been speaking.

Why anyone would attend a rave was really beyond him. All the sweaty people and the bodies pressing close. It just wasn't his kind of thing. At least he supposed that the music was somewhat bearable, if a little loud. Just a steady beat and no sappy words. Kanda found that sort of music easy to move to. That was the trouble after all. It wasn't that he was bad at dancing at all. It was that he was damn good at it. He would never live it down.

So he stayed out of sight and hoped that they would all just forget to make him go. As if the fate had heard his wishful thinking, the door opened suddenly to reveal Lavi who leaned against the door frame wearing a look of such smugness that Kanda thought longingly of Mugen upstairs in his room.

"Are you lost Yuu-chan?" Lavi asked him.

"I was looking for something. I had every intention of showing up later." Kanda replied steadily, trying to maintain his dignity as long as possible.

"What were you looking for?" Lavi asked, looking unimpressed with his explanation.

"Pillowcases." Kanda replied.

"Was there something wrong with yours?" Lavi asked and Kanda let the silence draw out for a few moments before replying.

"It was dirty. How did you find me?" Kanda said in a monotone voice.

"Komui sent everyone out searching for you." Lavi said and then assumed a face of mild disappointment. "I'm a Bookman."

Kanda assumed that this was somehow supposed to explain how Lavi had found him in a remote part of the basement and since it hardly did, he merely shook his head.

"Also, Komui said that the first person to find you and bring you upstairs would get a prize, so come along quietly." Lavi instructed and with the air of a man being led to the gallows Kanda followed along behind after a small "che" noise.

Why Kanda actually considered himself to be friends with these people he didn't know. They were all clearly insane. Lavi teased him mercilessly all the way up to the new "rave" room. Poor little Yuu-chan who was just clearly so terrified of dancing, public places and his own muscles. A vein had long since started to go on Kanda's temple and Lavi's smirk only increased the brighter the flush on Kanda's cheeks.

As they made their way upstairs Kanda suddenly stopped for a moment, his face breaking into a smirk that quickly faded into his usual solemn face. If everyone wanted to see him dance and let off some steam then fine. Kanda knew his change in demeanor hadn't gone unnoticed by Lavi so he threw the redhead a dirty look.

"I'll be sure to get you back for this Lavi. You could have just left me in peace. It's hardly necessary to carry on like this." Kanda said and tried to look haughty.

Lavi laughed nervously and stracthed the back of his neck.

"Ah, Yuu-chan, maybe you'll have fun." Lavi said.

"Oh yes. That's likely." Kanda said sarcastically as they turned the corner to find a group standing in the hallway ahead.

"I found him everyone." Lavi yelled, looking pleased with himself again.

"Ha!" Komui said, descending down on them. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to make an example out of you Kanda. You're going to break in our new dance floor all by yourself. We'll watch."

From the watching crowd there were gasps and mutterings. Lavi looked like he was sure that Kanda would completely lose it now. The group was stunned into silence when Kanda bowed slightly to Komui pulled off his black coat and handed it to Lavi.

"Hold that for me, won't you?" Kanda asked and Lavi nodded.

"Lovely!" Komui said excitedly and pulled Kanda into the room by his arm. The members of the order filled in and stood around the edges of the room and Reever started the music which reverberated loudly through the room. The lights were started and Kanda stretched his arms and rolled up the sleeves of his white button down shirt and adjusted his slim black tie for a moment before he closed his eyes and listened to the music.

Within seconds he had found the beat and began to dance. It was a simple beat and the music had a good buildup. Kanda almost felt sorry for his colleagues before he let the movement take him over. He moved his hips and arms fast but smooth, and let his boots move across the floor like he never would have been able to do if the floor at been crowded. As he let his body undulate to the beat he tried not to smirk again. His long ponytail flowed down his back and his black pants looked particularly tight when he moved just like that. He watched the identical looks of shock on Lavi and Allen's faces as the stood across the room from him.

Poor Komui ought to have remembered that Kanda was an excellent swordsmen. He had spent countless hours training his body to move. A proper fight, a really good one between two swordsmen really ought to look like a dance. The moves should be seamless and it should look effortless. Kanda supposed to way he was dancing just now was probably a little more provocative than his sword fighting normally looked but he was trying to make a point now.

He wondered how long Komui would continue to let him shake his hips like this before stopping him. They were employed by the Catholic Church after all. But they let him dance and at the end of the song Reever didn't start another one. Kanda saw with a mix of horror and satisfaction that everyone in the room was looking at him like they had never quite seen him before. He stalked across the floor and pulled his coat out of Lavi's hands and slung it over his shoulder.

"You were right Lavi, that wasn't so bad after all." Kanda said in a deadpan voice before turning and marching out of the room. As he went through the door he distinctly heard Allen's slightly strangled voice.

"Lavi, did you know he could do that?"

I love raving and I'll be cosplaying Kanda soon and was thinking about raving as him xD You made me twice as happy <3

Wonderful- Kanda being able to move does not sound awfully too OoC since swordsmans are suppose to be able to move- plus it is a deadly dance~

But I must be biased orz

wow, i thought that was great. and given some of the other weird stuff Komui does, i don't think a rave is even that unbelievable. seriously, i wouldn't put it past him.
and i totally think Kanda would be a great dancer. with all the shit you see him do with a sword, i could totally imagine him being very good at it.
