So, I was thinking about something just now. I was just reading chapter 99, where Jasdebi are talking to Allen about the debts that Cross left them. Jasdero says that their debts add up to 100 guineas. I wasn't sure what kind of currency this was, so I went to look it up, and I found out that guineas were no longer minted beginning in 1816. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guineas#Nineteenth_century) So, I was wondering, if the series takes place in the 19th century, do you think that the reasonable timespan that the series takes place in is between 1800 and 1816?

I think that given the level of common technology we see (Bell's patent on the telephone was 1877), it might be safer to say that the story is set closer to the end of the 19th century.

That said, I think the mangaka is playing a little fast and loose with history in the series (it is an AU, after all).

I don't think that the series takes place in the timespan between 1800 and 1816. I think it's closer to the end of the 19th century. I doubt alot if there were any telephones and trains in the time of Napoleon -__-
And in the anime you can also find some signs, that DGM takes place in the end of 19th century. For example, on this screencap you can see a poster, that was drawn by Alfons Mucha in 1897.

Hoshino did a mix and match of elements from different parts of the 19th century. As mentioned, AUs do wonders for such stuff.

er.... end of the nineteenth century = the last decade or two. Which means we're probably talking about the 1890s

The anime takes it a step further in one of the fillers and lists the year as 1897, I believe.

There are a mix of elements from the 19th century, as it's meant to be in an alternate universe. There are a lot of anachronisms in the series.

However, in episode 30, Riza's (newly deceased) husband's grave read -1897. And the Alfons Mucha poster date matches up with that fairly well. It seems 1897 is the final verdict in the anime, at least, so I stick with that.

I should point out too that the term "guineas" is still used today in Britain (but not as commonly) even though the currency itself is called the "pound sterling" -- I've seen British people in IRC chats mention it.
