[Fic] Fuel for the Fire

Title: Fuel for the Fire
Day/Theme: 25th February 2010; hope like a drug in the blood (written for 31_days)
Series: D.Gray-man
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Komui, mentions others
Rating: PG (one slightly bad word used)
Notes: Spoilers for up to the latest chapter.

Komui does not allow himself to dwell too long on the war. He cannot afford to. If he does, he might realize the sheer bleakness of the situation they're in. They are heavily outnumbered and fighting a century-old war against an enemy that grows stronger by the day. And in the end they are all only human.

It is in times like this that the uniform is stifling and he can almost see the blood on it, can almost smell the iron thick in his lungs, can almost hear the dying screams of their fallen. And then there are the ones who still live. And the fact that they are still alive might be even stronger proof of Central's indelible sins.

The images come unbidden, of Lenalee broken and tied down, her once bright eyes dead to the world until he'd arrived. He has read what little there is written about Kanda's beginnings, seen the unveiled distrust and hatred in his cold gaze. Then there are the names of those who had been sacrificed - like lambs at an altar to a god that does not seem to care - and the only consolation he can give himself is that he will carry their names with him for the rest of his life if need be. And now... now it is Allen who must suffer being treated like nothing more than a tool, to be destroyed and discarded if he so much as steps out of favour with those pompous bastards.

But they are here, and they are alive. That is what matters, and that is what he takes heart in. Allen will consume as much food as he breathes air, his sweet little sister will keep smiling, Lavi will tell his sometimes inappropriate jokes (come to think of it, he was going to have to see about the company his beloved Lenalee was keeping), and Kanda... well, Kanda would always be Kanda. As long as they're alive, as long as loud carefree laughter continues to erupt from the cafeteria and echo freely down these halls, he can believe in tomorrow.

The way Komui sees it, hope might be the only thing that's keeping them going.
