Episode 93

Just a little something about Kanda's tattoo, people...

This was in the manga too but I missed for some reason clearly, because it wasn't shiny there.

Hum, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the Akuma plant... egg... something? Or are those symbols the effect of Cross's magic? Either way... Hum, clue to something about Kanda and his mysterious healing powers? Kanda's tattoo seems to have an extra dash on top but the shiny-ness of the symbols might be "hiding" it... Or are they actually different symbols? Does anyone know what they mean?

And not really related but... it's a woman singing the 14th's song... Hum, Maria, anyone?

Yeah, I have nothing more to say. Discuss! =D o

[identity profile] zackichan.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
wow it really seem to be the same symbol o.o
I hope that the truth behind Kandas tattoo will be revealed soon (omg sorry for my bad english xD).
I always thought of his abilities like a kind of second innocence or somethin'...

[identity profile] defade.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
The woman singing was Allen's seiyuu, Sanae Kobayashi.

[identity profile] criaze.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, she's right. Sanae Kobayashi is a girl, if anybody does still not know or perhaps, forgot XD

[identity profile] defade.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she's one of my favorite seiyuus, so I recognized her voice.:D Been following her ever since her role in Hikaru no Go.

Haha, let me hear your theory? I always love seeing things from different viewpoints.

[identity profile] criaze.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I was the one who forgot that Allen is being voiced by a girl haha XD

Bummer. So I really have to update the anime even if teh filler sucks big time. I need to hear those voices, both Allen's song and Maria's :D

[identity profile] animalboything.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The Skull People also did the symbols and said AUM when converting Tapp into being one of them, so it's not so much a surprise that Kanda ties in with them.

also wouldn't be surprised if the person that Allen has to kill is Kanda.

[identity profile] animalboything.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Initial translation said something along the lines of Allen 'killing that person' though later it was translated as 'one you love' which probably is more accurate.

Kanda said, "I can't die until I find that person."

Granted, I'm not saying that's my prediction, but more me really not being surprised. I'd be disappointed if it was Lenalee because that'd be so obvious, but also I'd be heartbroken if Allen and Kanda had to really duke it out. Could also have their fighting between them be a sort of prelude to it.

[identity profile] nilmiel-chan.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I thought in regard to who he'll have to kill, I kind of thought it might be the Millenium Earl. Not because Allen loves him, but he Fourteenth, being a Noah and all, would. But he's turned against him, and is forced to fight him. Even though his basic instinct as a Noah would be to follow the Earl. *shrugs* I dunno. I just really hope it isn't Lenalee. Or anyone else, for that matter.

[identity profile] arivess.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* I noticed it, too.

I wonder... I mean, the thing Cross did was a spell, right? And we're pretty certain that whatever the tattoo on Kanda is, it's a spell, too. Maybe they're of the same type? I mean, when you think about it, it's a bit similar -- keeping Kanda alive and keeping the egg in the Ark. Sort of. It's a "restoration" kind of thing, it feels like.

I've always thought "that person" that Kanda's looking for was the person who cast the spell on him in the first place. (I've been wondering, actually, if it might not be whoever taught Cross magic...)

[identity profile] arivess.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if it's connected to the 14th and/or Mana. The spells, I mean. I think it really is a bit too late to introduce new characters; likely, whoever it is will be someone we've at least heard of. (...But then again, as my friend reminded me, Sherril/Cyril/whatever-we're-calling-him-now is pretty much completely new, so who knows...)

*nods* I think it'll all come together.

[identity profile] arivess.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* Since the Earl was the master of magic, right? So it'd make sense if one of his Noahs knew magic. And. Heck. There must be a reason the 14th is the only one who can control the Ark...

Ah? I'm... not sure I remember that.

[identity profile] arivess.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. And there's the question of why Cross is so concerned with the 14th in the first place. I mean. His promise with the 14th doesn't exactly make any sense...

Huuuuuuh... I'd forgotten all about that. Hmm, it matched up with what we knew before, but if Allen got the whole of the 14th's memories, as they're implying now, I wonder how it's possible...

All I know is that the "symbol" is a sanskrit letter, and Kanda himself has a lot of symbolic ties to Hindu mythologies. No idea what the relation to that spell is, though.

[identity profile] tosshi.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
A little bit~

As we know, a few of the characters have names derived from brands, real people, etc. Considering the meanings therein, it's a more than good bet that Kanda = Khanda.

The Khanda was a kind of sword used in ancient India. It was a favorite of great warriors, etc, and one subset of Hinduism, the Sikhs, made it the central point of their religious symbol, representing the "knowledge of God".

The symbol is the "om", the sound that created the world. It's made up of four basic parts that represent the four states of human awareness: ordinary waking state, deep sleep, dream state, and the "awakened" state of absolute conscience. In Kanda's tattoo, the dream state is missing.

The lotus is a common repeated symbol in Hindu mythology, and the symbol for rebirth and enlightenment. There are a number of myths involving the lotus, and one goddess usually pictured sitting or standing on a lotus. Tying back into the "dream state" business, the lotus is brought up in various mythologies, and in real life, as a narcotic. In the Odyssey, there is an island of lotus-eaters, who drift into eternal dreaming by eating the lotus. Also certain variants of lotus can be turned into drugs that do, in fact, promote a state of waking dreams, often involving one's past. It was used ritually in ancient Egypt.

I'm sure you can find more if you do some research through google. =D

Also, someone on manga-helpers posted a picture of a "jewish sun symbol" that had that exact character on it, but upon doing some research I can't find that symbol again anywhere, and I've found one constant OTHER sun symbol that's actually the jewish one. So goodness knows. But I've seen Kanda's version of that symbol on various neo-pagan publications and fliers in public places, stuck in the middle of other hindu symbols. =)

[identity profile] kaizoku-shinobi.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Woah, that makes a lot of sense. Oo

I always thought that Kanda was named as he is because he's Japanese, and since there are a lot of ties to religion and God here I thought Kanda was chosen because it had the character for 'god' in it. >>;

I also never knew that the lotus had so many ties to Hinduism. But in China and possibly Japan, it's regarded as "a flower that blossoms every 1000 years, and will continue to blossom"; basically meaning that it's an immortal/regenerating/whatever type of flower. So that's my reason for the decision of a lotus. (Or maybe it's there to make fun of Kanda's interest of gardening and his lack of masculinity.)

[identity profile] tosshi.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Who knows. I would bet on the rebirth symbolism for the lotus, though. It's pretty universal, and since he has those other things that tie into Hinduism, I wouldn't be surprised if that did too.

Speaking of which, his bracelet, though it's again got that new-age neo-pagan thing about it now, is originally a Hindu prayer bracelet. ♥

[identity profile] kaizoku-shinobi.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
It is? Isn't it a nenju? I think a nenju would be more likely since he's Japanese.

Unless the nenju originated from the Hindu bracelet, then it'd basically be the same thing. lol

I remember Cross' being a bit different from Kanda's in the manga...

[identity profile] kayter.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nice observation
Sorry, i don't know if was too excited in the moment I was reading that part of the manga, but I can't remember those symbols, do they really appear? can you please tell me which chapter =)?

*basenglish,sorry*

[identity profile] fishing-teh-sky.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i was wondering this as well. actually, it has the same resemblance as the one in the manga as well. it's strange that it's Cross's magic that bears the symbol of Kanda's tattoo. perhaps this will be elaborated later on XD!

OMFG!! O.o

[identity profile] xlavix.livejournal.com 2008-07-26 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! someone else noticed this! :D I was looking at this and was all like Wot da F*ck!? I wasn't sure thought thanks for making it clear enough! I wonder what it means though....
