Clue me in...

To the people who've watched episode 102..

Photobucket

I heard that the series will end with episode 103, but I really really REALLY wished it was only a rumor, I mean; they said it'll end at 52 before, right? so I thought it might only be the end of season II... oh and there are some people who said there will be fillers because the anime is catching up with manga pretty quickly....??

Is anyone sure of what's going to happen to DGM-anime after ep.103!!? D:

Sorry to double post~ ^^;

I wish they aren't going to do it, but it seems they are going on an unofficial stop (and until the manga has something more for them to make?).

Aw shiznat, they can't end there! I want more MORE I TELL YOU!

Long story short, the ratings of D.Gray-man in Japan are really pathetic. It barely grazes 1.5-2% on a good week, which is twice less than Naruto and Bleach (3-4%) and four times less than One Piece (7-8%). Since it's a major Shonen JUMP series, it's going to be compared to those and it compares unfavorably. That's why D.Gray-man has nearly zero merchandise - the anime simply proves not profitable.

In addition, reviews of D.Gray-man anime series in Japan really sucked. 2channel outright hates it for a huge list of reasons and pretty much celebrated when it got canceled. The manga is still going good and strong, but the reactions to the anime range from strained to outright negative outside the established fandom.

My personal opinion aside, I suspect anime is down for the count unless they either hire another studio to redo it from the start, or have the existing team rethink their entire approach. As ratings, reviews and lack of merchandise proved, the series is doubtfully worth it anymore for the investors.

So that's why I can never get something better than cards of DGM... The Japanese audience doesn't like the anime. *headdesk*

I thought the anime was doing well because of the dvd sales, in september it got 4th place beating code geass, one piece, naruto and more.

Frankly, I'm surprised it wasnt cancelled sooner. It never struck me as being very popular, and I stopped watching ages ago.

ugh damn that sucks, I don't see why Naruto or Bleach would do better when they have millions of fillers and One Piece?! I've never even saw a effin episode, EVER.

The manga for DGM is doing fine thought right? I would cry for months if Jump ever discontinued the series

No merchandise? My purse and the many D.Gray-Man related auctions I've won on YAJ, and a few items that I've bought in the US too, they all beg to differ. You might not be finding the merchandise but there is a ton of it. Just on Animate-Shop's website there's something like 11 pages of results for D.Gray-Man, and they don't even have the rarer items from previous years.

[identity profile] tyne.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)

TOO SOON. TOO SOON. D: Also, I'm worried for the last episode. Just in case it isn't a big !FINALE! kind of thing to the series. I mean, 102 just makes me want to watch it forever and ever considering the plot is going such a long way in the manga.

[identity profile] haya5h1.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sad to see it stop, but it's at a good stopping place considering how close it is to where the manga is right now. And frankly I'd rather have a break than another season of horrid and pointless filler.

[identity profile] mellmell.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
That's too bad. It would've been cute to see the Zombie ark.

I'm sure people will think I'm a jerk when I say this but, I'm sure a big problem too were the fansubs and illegal downloading.

*runs and hides*

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd argue the complete opposite, to be honest, or at least I consider the fansubbing to have had no effect on the decision to cancel the series in Japan. It's mostly the Western audience that benefits from fansubs, and we're not the target audience in Japan where the ratings and merchandise are selling. You might be able to argue that fansubs have a negative effect on the English dub (which I'm not particularly inclined to agree with either, but that's a whole other argument), but I can't see how they would have had issues with the Japanese ratings, and that's what led to it being canceled.

That said, I'm on the list that definitely regrets that certain arcs won't be animated, the zombie one foremost in the list. :(

Honestly, they should stop it if they don't want to overlap the manga. Filler episodes are absolutely worthless when they do nothing for the story. I would rather them go in a different direction, much like they did with Fullmetal Alchemist, and end things

Or, end it, go with a different studio, and start off fresh with the Gray Arc. I really hope Japan doesn't give up on the series anime-wise.

[identity profile] blackwhite-rain.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
If that happens, I'd rather they go on a hiatus until there are enough things for them to make. *is still scared by Fullmetal Alchemist ending*

Gross, I don't want the anime to end.
How will they wrap up 103? =.=
I have a feeling it would be cheesy and random, lol.
But it would be nice if they do continue the series, either another company, or the same one doing an even better job. Just, oh god. No fillers.

Since they didn't do something like change the story at the end, it's likely there'll b OVAs like with HunterXHunter, as opposed to other animes who end the anime early by changing the story to make the finale really early like Inuyasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, Konjiki no Gash Bell, and a lot more that are less popular.

[identity profile] hiriko.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I really hope that the anime doesn't end here. :C Aaaagh, the ending would come way too soon. There's always the manga but I don't like the fact how so many things will be left open in the anime if it ends here.

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish if they'd known that they would be canceling the series that they had done so at the end of the Ark plotline. I mean, as far as climaxes go, that seems much greater than the fight against the Level 4. I'll adore seeing Linalee with her nifty-cool uber!boots, don't get me wrong, but having Lavi, Kanda, and Krory come back to life, plus adding all those hints about Allen and Linalee and the Heart/14th seem to make it a far more logical breaking point than where they left it. I've got to think they're hoping to be able to come back later on and work on this more, otherwise the closing point makes more sense.

I'm annoyed with the anime, I'll admit it, because it feels like it had so much potential that was just squandered. All of the filler eps early on were just a waste of animation and I hated that certain characters and storylines felt so shafted. Linalee in particular is far more badass in the manga than she's ever been in the anime (especially in the earlier arcs) and it's just a sacrilege to her character.

I would much rather have them ditch the anime, much as I'll miss my weekly DGM-in-motion fix, than have them produce another crappy filler arc along the line of the Lulubelle eps.

I would not at all be surprised to see someone try to make something out of the manga again in a few years – either another anime series that's more faithful to the original or a live-action movie or series. The manga fandom in Japan is still strong, if sales charts (and amounts of doujinshi produced!) are any indication.

I have to say that although the anime had its ups and downs, there were some things about it that were consistently good – like the performances of the seiyuus. They gave it their all even when the material was less than stellar (Lavi's seiyuu especially).

I'm kinda wondering if they might start the next arc or season later on, re-naming it, as Naruto's Part II became Shippuuden? One can hope!
