This (http://www.onemanga.com/D.Gray-Man/166/07/) page always made me think he named Allen after his dog. lol
Edit to clarify! I don't think he named Allen after the dog, I think that suggests Allen was already Allen at that time, so he just got his surname from Mana. If that makes sense. That page is confusing and I'm tired. :c
I always thought he was talking to the dog with that line, not that the dog was named Allen (Like oh, you were that kid's friend too- not just mine). Because Allen is a pretty common name, and it just seems so...unlikely that Allen went his first seven years without any sort of name to be referenced by.
I was just wondering that! Since you brought it up and all. I think there would have to be a little more to Allen being chosen to hold the 14th's memories, like there's something about him no one knows and eventually it'll come out in the open and we'll all be like "OH SHI-!" My OH SHI- prediction is that Tyki is really Allen's brother--DUN DUN DUN! Because they look like a little Allen and Tyki (http://www.onemanga.com/D.Gray-Man/166/11/).
Oh, and so, in conclusion, if they had the same name, it would make it seem like the 14th chose Allen because--OMG--he's an Allen, too! Or, less stupidly, it could be comforting to Mana if he still had a little Allen in his life to look after. Aww.
I personally thought that him talking to Allen with that line made a lot of sense. Cross himself said that Mana went crazy after the 14th died, as if he didn't know who he's talking to anymore. It made sense to me that he would name anyone close to him at the moment with his brother's name.
So he would first name the dog Allen after his brother to fill in the gap. Then he would shift the name to the current Allen once the dog died and he need someone new to fill in his loss.
Also, Allen was pretty much an errand boy for a traveling circus at the time. If you research, most traveling circuses in late 19th century were infamous for their poor living conditions. It made sense to me that a random kid without parents or any particular use would be just a "brat" to everyone around him.
Plus, if you notice, Allen gets very fussy when he's called by nicknames like "brat" or "beansprout" and tries to correct people into calling him Allen. The only person he lets get away with it is Cross. He still doesn't correct Mana into using his name when he's called a brat in that scene.
i actually always thought that Allen (Walker) was named after the dog too. and i believe that the dog was named after Mana's brother/the 14th. i don't believe our Allen ever had a name before that due to him being an orphan at birth if i'm not mistaken
i can't remember where it was, but there was a moment in the manga where Allen "asked" Mana "when you said 'i love you Allen' were you saying that to me or him"
I thought so! It was just another mark toward my OH SHI- moment! In all seriousness though, I was wondering why his hair was getting wavy. The few images we have of the 14th seem to suggest his hair was short and kind of spiky, like Allen's when his Innocence is activated. Then again, in the page I linked above, you can tell the parts of his hair that aren't sticking up are wavy. Either way it creeped me out. ._.
That's a good theory, and I do like it. But what makes me wonder is...what about the Earl? He definitely didn't have any suspicions about Allen being the 14th until it was revealed he had the musicians abilities and he had run across Allen SEVERAL times.
Which if there was a little boy missing Mana Walker with the EXACT same name as the 14th, wouldn't that be enough for him to try a bit harder to make sure that kid didn't live JUST in case?
Looking back over all this depressing stuff is, well, depressing. :(
Maybe, if it really went 14th!Allen --> dog!Allen --> brat!Allen, he was saying it to all of them. Maybe he was too crazy by then to remember which Allen was what. And maybe he's happy with doggie!Allen now. : )
In case you were wondering, I found the raw text and in the last panel, Allen does say his name in quotations. Which was the reason for this post. It's such a strange thing for him to do!
...Also, I still want to know why the level 4 uses hiragana for his "Noa" comment, considering it's usually written in katakana. I'm guessing that's why the translation left it as Noa instead of Noah. So strange.
yea, it's depressing enough that he's an orphan, but all this makes it even worse.
that's the really sad part. we don't even know if he really thought of our Allen as an individual. and now i'm thinking about Allen accidentally turning him into an akuma and i want to cry. just because while Mana was trying to kill Allen, he told he said "i love you Allen".
it's ok. apparently i'm real awesome at theories at 1am, my friend and i were just discussing the manga and i came up with other stuff irrelevant to this particular subject
Chapter 158 (http://www.onemanga.com/D.Gray-Man/158/01/), Evil Flower. On pages 8 and 9, the Earl wonders why he didn't simply kill Allen during their first meeting at Mana's grave. He describes it as a very persistent dream, as if he cannot understand how this mistake came to pass. It's like he realized back then that there is something about Allen, but chose to brush it off at the time.
In any case, Allen's continued survival since that night is apparently something that tortures the Earl enough to give him nightmares.
Road also observes that the Innocence might have known that Allen is the 14th and allied with him for that reason. Is that really the case? We know Allen's Innocence is special because he was born with it infused into him. Did it come into his body because it knew Allen would become the 14th? Or did the 14th manipulate the events and planted himself into Allen because he thought the special Innocence may be the Heart? We don't know the answers to that yet.
Another note - Allen is very protective of his name. Why would he be so stubborn to refuse all kinds of nicknames, even from his friends? Is it because he likes his name? Or is it because Allen is the name and identity offered to him by Mana, the first identity beyond "Hey, you!" that he has had since childhood? In the last case, it makes sense that he would be very protective of being Allen Walker. It's the only thing he ever was.
And that would make his conflict with the 14th very, very personal. Because if Allen would accept that he's not the Allen Walker, but merely a replacement for Mana's dead brother, his entire identity and all his promises would crumble away. He cannot allow that to happen.
OHHHHHHHH. I never thought anything of him saying his name in quotations. I guess I was thinking of him quoting himself? But that is really interesting. So is the Level 4 using hiragana. I wonder where the story's gonna go now? Is Timothy going to fade into the background like Chaoji now or are we gonna be strung along some more over this? I don't know if I can handle being strung along after what happened in 182. Seriously.
I tend to get stuck on little details like that! Also, things like quotations stand out so much more in Japanese, so I know they're implying something going on with his name. I actually didn't think much of it at first, since Allen looks like he's back to normal in that panel. The more I thought about it, the more it bugged me though.
The Level 4 using hiragana might be a quirk of its speech... I should go look at more raws to check. I can't remember. > >;
That entire part, from the moment they reach the new headquarters to the moment Cross disappears just makes me ill. It feels like everything falls apart, but then it keeps chugging along, moving into the Timothy arc. Which has been a welcome reprieve for me. I don't wanna think about the depressing stuff. I do want bunny to come back though. Stupid rabbit, he's not allowed to be the new ghost character!
