This (http://www.onemanga.com/D.Gray-Man/166/07/) page always made me think he named Allen after his dog. lol
Edit to clarify! I don't think he named Allen after the dog, I think that suggests Allen was already Allen at that time, so he just got his surname from Mana. If that makes sense. That page is confusing and I'm tired. :c
I always thought he was talking to the dog with that line, not that the dog was named Allen (Like oh, you were that kid's friend too- not just mine). Because Allen is a pretty common name, and it just seems so...unlikely that Allen went his first seven years without any sort of name to be referenced by.
I personally thought that him talking to Allen with that line made a lot of sense. Cross himself said that Mana went crazy after the 14th died, as if he didn't know who he's talking to anymore. It made sense to me that he would name anyone close to him at the moment with his brother's name.
So he would first name the dog Allen after his brother to fill in the gap. Then he would shift the name to the current Allen once the dog died and he need someone new to fill in his loss.
Also, Allen was pretty much an errand boy for a traveling circus at the time. If you research, most traveling circuses in late 19th century were infamous for their poor living conditions. It made sense to me that a random kid without parents or any particular use would be just a "brat" to everyone around him.
Plus, if you notice, Allen gets very fussy when he's called by nicknames like "brat" or "beansprout" and tries to correct people into calling him Allen. The only person he lets get away with it is Cross. He still doesn't correct Mana into using his name when he's called a brat in that scene.
I was just wondering that! Since you brought it up and all. I think there would have to be a little more to Allen being chosen to hold the 14th's memories, like there's something about him no one knows and eventually it'll come out in the open and we'll all be like "OH SHI-!" My OH SHI- prediction is that Tyki is really Allen's brother--DUN DUN DUN! Because they look like a little Allen and Tyki (http://www.onemanga.com/D.Gray-Man/166/11/).
Oh, and so, in conclusion, if they had the same name, it would make it seem like the 14th chose Allen because--OMG--he's an Allen, too! Or, less stupidly, it could be comforting to Mana if he still had a little Allen in his life to look after. Aww.
i actually always thought that Allen (Walker) was named after the dog too. and i believe that the dog was named after Mana's brother/the 14th. i don't believe our Allen ever had a name before that due to him being an orphan at birth if i'm not mistaken
i can't remember where it was, but there was a moment in the manga where Allen "asked" Mana "when you said 'i love you Allen' were you saying that to me or him"
but there was a moment in the manga where Allen "asked" Mana "when you said 'i love you Allen' were you saying that to me or him"
Yes, there was a page with something like that. But it isn't relevant to the question of Allen's name.
For one thing, even if the 14th was called Allen, Allen has no way of knowing that. And also, the phrase used (at least in the translation) wasn't "when you said 'I love you Allen'" but "when Mana said he loved me, did he mean me? Or...?". And that doesn't have anything to do with the name, but refers to just the fact that the 14th is within Allen.
Hm........ I wonder if/when we'll get Allen's true past! and wow now that I think about it Kanda's too. ... there's still so much we don't know. Which is GOOD, cause it means the manga will be running for quite some time I suppose. :Db
And that imagine makes me very sad. ;__; Bebie-toddler Allen in the snow with a lil "HI Im Allen" tag? Or maybe in a basket at the circus.. D: D: D:
I think it's very, very unlikely that Allen went for all that time without a first name. Someone must have taken care of him when he was a young child, whoever that was, and even if they didn't give him a name - which is unlikely - he would have picked one for himself. There's no way he'd introduce himself to people as "call me brat" or "call me boy" or "sorry, I haven't got a name". Allen had a job, clothes, could talk properly, and wasn't an idiot, even though he didn't have anyone who really cared.
Plus, I don't think that brat!Allen would have taken kindly to Mana giving him a new name. Mana seemed weird, yes, but I don't think he ever gave the impression of being a genuine madman to Allen, and it's pretty strange to give a new name to a kid who already has a perfectly good one.
I would like to agree on that. It is more likely that Allen already has his first name before meeting Mana. In this confusing page (http://www.onemanga.com/D.Gray-Man/166/07/), Mana, is directing it to the dead dog. So it's "Oh dog, you were Allen's friend too". That's how I interpreted it.
Yes, that's how I read it too. Actually I was really surprised when I found out that people had interpreted it as the dog being called Allen...It seemed really clear to me the way I read it first. I know the idea of Allen not having had a name and all is very angsty and romantic, but I don't think it's supported by the text and context so far.
And I'd really like to think that Mana wasn't so gone in the head that he'd go around naming Allen after a dog...He seemed strange but not that strange.
Yeah. He's a little old to be going around without a name for that long. ; Definitely doesn't seem the type to have been content without a name, or willing towards a new one.
Bah. I just really want to figure out why he said his name in brackets in the latest chapter. :(
The brackets are just Japanese quotation marks, lol. It's the equivalent of saying in English, "I'm always telling you, 'call me Allen'." Like, just quoting what he usually says to Kanda. It doesn't mean anything sinister :)b
You didn't quite read the front portion of the manga, or might have missed out.
When Mana died, Allen was grieving for Mana, and the whole Mana-turned-into-Akuma incident happened. Allen turned from black/brown hair into white from his over-grieving on the fact that Mana is dead AND he turned Mana into an akuma (which Mana went crazy over and wanted to kill him).
I'm quite sure Allen wasn't named after the dog. ^^;;;;; The translation of that line was ambigious, but Mana was saying "I see, so you cared for the dog too afterall."
Mana picked up Allen at the circus and then gave him his surname after he adopted him.
I agree that Brat!Allen probably wouldn't stand for Mana giving him the dog's name all of sudden. XD;;;
In the end, the big question is.. how'd Allen end up in the circus/what's his true past? lol.
Well, this is nitpicking a bit, but what Mana said in that chapter was addressing the dog. It wasn't "Allen, you cared about this dog." It was, "Dog, I see that you and Allen were friends too." I'm surprised so many people were confused by this D:
No offense, but I seriously doubt Allen was named after the dead dog. It's just how the line was put.
Please don't make Allen cry. *points to icon*
The theory about 14th = Allen Walker seems pretty plausible. I don't see why not, but at the same time I.. also think that there would have been ALARMBELLS!! in the Duke's head if he found a lil Allen Walker around.
Personally I'm firmly of the opinion that Allen = Allen from the beginning though and that Mana just added on Walker after his adoption.
It'd be kinda strange and even more cruel if Mana even "implanted" Allen w/ the 14th's exact name. "Hey kid, I don't care what you were before. You're Allen Walker now." I mean geez, give the kid a break. >_>

...In fact, I think Black hair!Allen looks more like the 14th. That is, I'm assuming the 14th is the child on the right.
