Chapter 168 (SPOILERS)

So I came home, checked for D.Gray-man updates, and... WHAT THE HELL...?!

I am tired so my English is horrible... Please bear with me...
- During Cross and Allen's conversation, Cross claimed that this war had a hidden side to it. Cross also said, "This time, don't die"
- Hitler (I have no idea how to spell his name) was still wary of Allen
- Link was part of the Crow group
- Lavi asked Bookman about "the hidden side of the war", and a nervous Bookman told Lavi to never speak of that again until Bookman allowed him to
- Cross was sitting in his room when someone knocked on the door. Cross took his gun out... and then there was a sound of the door opening
- Scene changed to Allen waking up and saying "It's morning..."
- Scene switched back to Cross... and Cross was killed.

Was Cross really dead? If so, who killed him, and why?

Based on Hoshino's track record, I am actually not too worried about Cross. Hoshino has never killed off any major characters in D.Gray-man, and Cross is just too mysterious and important (and cool) to be offed this early in the game. So let me quote what Allen once said, "Master won't die even if you kill him"

Speaking of Allen, poor kid... he just got the shock of his life in regards to his beloved father, and then he was told that he was going to die, and by the way, he was also going to kill someone he loved... and now the one person that he could rely on was out of the scene as well. Wonderful.

Oh Allen... Someone up there really hates you.

...well, whoever killed Cross wasn't after destroying his Innocence, looks like the gun down there is perfectly fine.

That probably rules out the Noahs and the Earl then.
The first suspect is the Church/Mr. Hitler of course, and the next popular theory is Allen/14th. The first speculation is too obvious, and the latter theory... I am not quite sure what to make of it.

Night - detained by Central, found out that his father was related to the 14th, discovered that he was the vessel for the 14th, realized that his father might have seen him as a mere replacement, told that he was going to slowly die, also told that he was going to murder the people that he cared about
Next morning - Master was murdered

Wow... another twist. I have a firm belief that Cross is not dead (though what agenda it entails, I have no idea and that seems to be Cross's specialty).

If Cross is really killed, then logically, there is nothing stopping the Earl from destroying the Order for good. As a sorcerer and loremaster, Cross is the thorn in the Earl's side. Without him, even with the other Generals present, the Earl will engage and defeat them.

I knew this was gonna happen dammit it all to hell and beyond! After reading the first page of chapter 165 I bloody-damn-knew he was gonna die! *hides off in her corner of woe* I hate being right about this kinda stuff...Though I agree with gunned he looks damn hot! >.>

DAMN. We didn't even learn anything about Maria or why he wears that damnable mask!

And...I'm gonna get hate for this but...I say Cross killed himself. Like how last chapter he told Allen he had to kill someone he loved. So to keep Allen from having to do it he did it himself. Just a theory. :P

...Considering the first page of chapter 165 with the "I always wanted to give Tim to you" thing... I get a very, very bad feeling about all this. And it's just so usual to have the mentor who has all the answers and can keep the bad guys at bay die that I'm not going to think about it, let my brain explode from the overwhelming realisation that Cross could, indeed, be dead. It would be one hell of a move from Hoshino to kill a character like Cross but... I don't want him to die ;-;

Oh and I want to see that part with Bookman and Lavi talking about the hidden side of the war! X3 Panda, what are you hiding from us~?

Anyway, Hoshino keeps reminding me why this is my favourite manga :3 Plot is back and kicking ass and more secrets are lurking everywhere. Can't wait to learn more ;-;

I couldn't resist reading the spoilers. And after that I went...

asdfjgg Cross killed??!! And now new things pop up, like the hidden side of the war (I thought this war is kind of hidden...a hidden side to a hidden war? @.@). This chapter is just too... interesting. If I didn't read your translations, I might haved had a heart attack while reading the part where Cross "dies" D:

Regarding the "You'll have to kill someone you love", I'm still trying to believe in the theory that Allen has to kill the Noah family when he "becomes" the 14th, and that would be quite painful for him since after all they're his family. Nooo I don't want Allen to be the one who killed Cross ;_;
Then again, his face is not clearly seen in the scene...the hair is covering up a lot O.O That body may actually be another person's [whom Cross killed because that person is going to kill him?] I know that Hoshino-sensei don't usually kill off characters, but... >.< I can't help but worry for Cross for some reason. And uhhh, what's with the ripped curtains? /can't think a reason why a gunshot/bloody killing scene would have ripped curtains

Part of me doesn't believe it. They haven't killed anyone important yet (is ignoring Anita and Mahoja and Tapp)... please, please, please... let it be some sort of illusion. But the other half of me kinda thinks it's real. Kind of a wake up call. D8
