another Hiatus ?

Quote:
"So Hoshino got caught plagiarizing a long time ago but the charges were dropped. However, now she once again got caught plagiarizing a character of Takeshi Obata and he's now seeking justice. Thus, Jump has announced, along with the hiatus, that re-serialization of the series will be undetermined. "
anyone know if this is accurate ?? I found it from Animesuki forum.

Takeshi Obata vs. Hoshino Katsura:

=\ I love Obata's work but now he seems small minded to me by make such a fuss over a little star that looks like something he did before... which he probably stole from somewhere else ..actually. and don't get me started about the second picture, because it is absolutely ridiculous.

I hope they will not cancel it or something. T___T or..or I'll miss my Tykiiiii ♥

What the... The first one, I can understand, but the second doesn't make sense at all. He might as well call plagiarism on every black-haired profile shot.

[identity profile] crossfires.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, that second image is beyond ridiculous :/
Hopefully once this has all been sorted out she will be able to continue, one way or another. :(

What's the source of this? Something legit? I'd heard that it was Carpal Tunnel surgery once more.

And, as much as I love Hoshino... thinking from a creative stance as a writer, I've been plagiarized before and it really, really stings--though, fortunately, in all the cases with my original work, the people were easily caught. And honestly, with the second one, I see it. ): The first case is really unacceptable, though, and absolutely idiotic of Hoshino to have done considering how well-read Death Note is. Also, if this mess happened... there's no way that it's coming back. God damn it, Hoshino.

Granted, I'm not too surprised considering Hoshino steals a lot of her character designs... Timcampy vs. the Golden Snitch, Kanda versus Obito, etc.

Edit: Also, like Cross versus one of the characters in ToA... it was uncanny. I'll try to find it again but even his second uniform was... yeah.

.... Goddamnit, Hoshino.

Uh, I could see Timcanpy vs. the Golden Snitch, but Kanda versus Obito (Naruto character, yes?)? That one I just don't see. And honestly, the only similarity Cross seems to have to any of the ToA cast might be to Luke/Albel for the long red hair, or to Jade for long hair + glasses. Either case seems to be a stretch to be making a comparison to me (and, IIRC, I think we met Cross before ToA came out in Japan). :/ IMHO, Grell from Kuroshitsuji would be a closer comparison in terms of character design. Similarity doesn't necessarily mean that someone ripped off the design - sometimes, it just happens.

Does anyone other than me find it utterly hilarious that the originator of Death Note is "SEEKING JUSTICE" by murdering D.Grayman in cold blood....? >.>

This is completely ridiculous if it's true. It's possible for two people to get a similar idea completely independent of each other =/. I don't think that J.K. Rowling plagiarized the concept of being flushed down a toilet as transportation from Tomo Takabayashi, for example. If this is indeed real, then I'm disgusted with Takeshi Obata =/

Of course not, she only plagiarizes from Wizard's Hall. :P

If plagiarism is actually the reason behind the hiatus, I'm kind of disappointed in light of the second image. However, I have to echo one of the comments I saw at the AnimeSuki forum: Why didn't her editors catch this? Seriously.

The issue over the first image, though, is ridiculous - if Obata had a problem with that one, then he's being overly sensitive, and it would make him sound like he just didn't like Hoshino for whatever reason. While he probably would have a case with the second image, which hopefully could be resolved with reserialization, that first one? He might as well go after every dark-haired profile panel out there (and there are a lot of them).

IDK, I just hope this isn't the case. I'm really worried about the future of D.Gray-man if Obata really does take Hoshino to court over the second image; they're not so tolerant of plagiarism, and unless the allow Hoshino to reserialize the plagiarized panels, DGM will probably be canceled. (Unless this is all pure speculation and the hiatus is health-based over her wrist again, which - while I'd feel sorry for Hoshino's poor wrist - I really hope is the case instead.)

[identity profile] date-masamune69.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
just a piece of shit! he 's running after money or what?

this is just coincidence!

and after all may be she was just inspired by him?

why sorachi(gintama) wasn't on justice after many and many inspiration by other manga
/anime?!

[identity profile] sashimi-salad.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So any mangaka drawing a side profile with flowing dark hair is instantly plagiarising Obata now? LOL!

[identity profile] pinkified.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The first picture is so obviously plagiarized it hurts. How can anyone not see it? I'm dissapointed.

[identity profile] lishypo.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I wanna know what's happening in the first picture. What's that person doing with that hand? Just curious. Also, the way I understood it in the beginning, the obviously plagiarized one is the one that was resolved? That seems a little ridiculous, if so.

I know a lot of people are enraged by the plagiarism...

but I think it's stupid.

I have a good feeling this is not the first time someone created a starfish hand (and it's not like it's OMFG!BRILLIANTIDEA! either) :/ If DGM is axed for such a ridiculous thing, then I'll rage about it.

Besides that, if it came down to manga and plagiarism...I think by now, every Manga-Ka would be trying to "seek justice" on each other. Just art in general for that matter.

What ever the issues is confirmed to be for the hiatus, since this right now is also speculation, hope it's not so serious and solved.

[identity profile] lishypo.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto.

[identity profile] kyouya-akai.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I heard about that too
but really, the second one is ridicules to me...
as if such an image wasn't used in any other manga before I mean hello? there are a millions of different series out there and somehow some pics look like another, it is not as if everyone could make new perspectives or something

I really hope that Obata is not that small minded because he has a lot of fans too and his series also sell good so why making such a fuss about those two pictures...

[identity profile] mellmell.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Above all this, though. Until you find an official source, I say there's really no use worrying about it.

It's like playing Telephone. Someone might've just posted those first two pictures noting their resemblance. Then someone took it and was like, 'OMG plagiarism!'.
For all we know, Hoshino could've gotten permission to use it.
Not to get anyone's hopes up, but come on. It's these types of rumors that make people hate a person when there really is no reason to.

[identity profile] lishypo.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I can't fully believe this is the case for the hiatus until there is a really reliable source for the information. Hasn't Hoshino been quoted recently that she would keep doing her best and drawing as long as she could? That sounds like as long as her health holds up to me. That might be a much older quote tacked onto the controversy though, I'm not sure.

Whatever the reason, I think all this hullabaloo is as ridiculous as wanting to press charges over pretty hair. Fandom needs to calm down and just keep enjoying what we have.

(I need a facepalm icon, but alas.)

Really, this is all seems rather juvenile from my standpoint. Granted, I'm not condoning plagiarism of any sort (in fact, it disgusts me), and there are certainly similarities, but can't there be some other means to an end?

And perhaps this is insensitive of me, but I sincerely wish this is a rumor and Hoshino is on hiatus for, again, health related reasons. (Better than a lawsuit, at any rate...)

... Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's been stated somewhere that Hoshino actually worked with Obata before? If so, then the starfish hand thing could very well have been her design in the first place, or she could have gotten permission, etc. Also if it really was a case of plagiarism I think we'd have gotten official news by now. =\ That chapter came out weeks ago. ... Also the second picture is just silly. Yes, they do look similar, but I've seen dozens of other panels that look a lot like that throughout DGM and in a few other mangas, as well. It's not that hard to come up with a profile shot of someone with their hair in their face-- it's a pretty natural thing to draw, honestly. I do it all the time.

Personally, I think it's a lot more likely that Hoshino's having problems with her hand again or something. Hand problems, carpal tunnel especially, can be really hard to get rid of permanently. =\ Trust me on this one, I've been suffering minor wrist pains for years. So really? This plagiarism thing is just a rumor, and I'm not going to trust it until we get actual, official confirmation. >>;

Just my two cents.

[identity profile] murasaki-mary.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. :)

Also, it could be that she has to take an extra week or two after Golden Week to polish the old chapters that she needs to complie for volume 18. At http://mangahelpers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7754&page=13 on Manga Helpers, post #185 says that the next volume might be out this June. But after looking at the past 10 or so chapters, they don't seem to have a lot of rough panels in them. Though, I have noticed that Hoshino changes her screen tones for her finalized tankoubons.

Oh Obata. Fame has gone to your head!

[identity profile] tablo.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
oh shit, if that's plagiarism in the second pic then i've definitely plagiarised obata without knowing it! D:

[identity profile] ecchipiro.livejournal.com 2009-05-04 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Small minded indeed. Makes you wonder why Naoko Takeuchi never sued Kubo Tite for having a talking black cat in his series who transforms into a woman./sarcasm

[identity profile] i-am-mowse.livejournal.com 2009-05-05 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
wow... i think obata is just getting paranoid over the fact that his work is getting plagiarized and so he's just filing charges against anyone who seems to be imitating him. gyah!!!! i don't want d-grayman to get cut short!!!! ToT

[identity profile] attaining.livejournal.com 2009-05-05 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
There has been absolutely nothing from any reputable source about Hoshino's "plagiarism." This is all just Internet rumor. |D

[identity profile] naru-kyou.livejournal.com 2009-05-05 03:11 am (UTC)(link)

I just don't think that Hoshino would be so stupid as to openly plagiarize a known & successful artist. I'm going to trust in the comment 6 above mine.

[identity profile] aubergine-pilot.livejournal.com 2009-05-05 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
...that second picture.

Uh. The hair doesn't match up exactly, but the lines of the actual face... that's a line-for-line trace. Look at the nose and the upper lip in particular. EVEN THE INKED LINE WEIGHT MATCHES WTF.

Damn it, Hoshino... why you do this? ;^;
