Cosplay Help

As I sit here typing this entry, I require your assistance with my girlfriend's second gen Allen Walker cosplay I'm sewing for her. I've looked at many reference pics and have the perfect one and a few more from volume 13 and 14. BUT, I've encountered a dilemma.

Ever since I saw Allen's amazing Second gen outfit, I was sure that it was two pieced: a jacket and some kinda skirt thing. That was cool, then my girlfriend asked me to help her with her Crowned Clown cosplay by making the second gen outfit for her if she supplied the fabric. Of course I agreed since she doesn't have a sewing machine and such. So, I found a good reference pic on a package of D. Gray-Man stickers I had bought for her upcoming birthday. I took a look and the outfit appeared to be a one-pieced cloak with a strap across the waist. I thought "alright, that'll  make things easier for me." but then I found another reference pic from the manga (a very good full body picture of it) and now, honestly... I CAN'T TELL WHAT IT IS.

So please, oh wise god of information known as Live Journal, give me your opinion. Which would be more canon to make? A one or two-piece outfit for her?

found some more pics (second times a charm)

From this pair the first makes it look more like a long coat where as on the second the top section is bulging over a little.

Looks like the waist band is tighter than the jacket, again, but you can see Kanda's is a full length.

I'd go with one piece full length. You can get bigger versions of these pictures from MiniTokyo. Hope these pictures help.

Yeah, it looks like a long trenchcoat with a belt across. If you aren't sure you can try to see what other cosplayers have done on cosplay.com

That does seem hard to tell, what with that white band around the waist. I'd make a one-piece jacket as well, but only put the zipper (or whatever closure) to the waist, and then cover it with the white belt that ties in the back or on the side.

With things like this I generally figure out what works best as I go. If you have the money/materials/time (which most cosplayers don't, I find) then I would make a rough example of each style in an inexpensive cotton and then try them on and see which looks best. Though having said that, I think your best bet would be a long coat.

Sorry for the long and ramble-y reply, I really can't shut up when is comes to sewing and cosplay, but I hope it'll help. Good luck!

Hm, you could maybe use one of those double-ended zippers with two sliders on them, so it could open at the bottom but could close if necessary?

And yea, I can't say I've ever made a mock-up example beforehand for those same reasons. It's always recommended but... xD *is a hypocrite*

Looks like it's supposed to be a one-piece, but belted and with some of the top of the jacket bulging/hanging over the top of the belt they way material tends to do. The zip doesn't go all the way down to the belt either, so that might also contribute to the fabric riding up and out.

Have you ever seen Cosrevo's costumes before? Very expensive, and so far it seems one can only purchase from Japan, but their 2nd gen Allen Walker costume (http://www.cosrevo.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=48) is extremely accurately done. Perhaps looking the pictures will give you some ideas?

The only thing they didn't bother making were the boots, which they re-use for other costume photoshoots.

This probably isn't the final design of the second uniform, but this draft sketch seems to show it as a two-piece uniform.

Sorry to complicate things. @@
