D.Gray-Man Anime Licenced

"At their Anime Central industry panel, FUNimation Entertainment announced the acquisition of Romeo X Juliet, Gonzo's 24-episode sci-fi take on the Shakespeare play. It will be released in two half-season boxes, with the first due out sometime in the spring of 2009. Funimation also confirmed that the release date for Ouran High School Host Club will be revealed during a special event on May 30.

At the same time as the panel was taking place, the Funimation.com website was updated with a splash page for another new license: D.Gray-man, which is also on track for a 2009 release.

Beat me by minutes in posting the news :).

I'm excited to see how they handle the dub (I can't imagine a sub only release).

Well, it's about time.

I'm surprised it HASN"T been licensed yet.

[identity profile] wisteria233.livejournal.com 2008-05-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't say I'm surprised, though I am thankful that VIZ didn't get the license.

Just wonderful - we'll get a slew of idiotic Narutards looking for a new series "BECAUSE THEY HAVE COOL COSTUMES!!!! LOLOLOLOL"

UGH. And Funimation too. UGH.

I was highly surprised that after 80+ episodes it hasn't been licensed. Thankfully it's not VIZ. I'm anticipating the dub, I wonder who will they cast.

Funimation is okay for me...

Well, if they're going to show it in television. They have to censor stuff, DGM has it's own share of blood, alcohol and tobacco. Like what they did in FMA, One Piece and Naruto. Gah.

we'll get a slew of idiotic Narutards looking for a new series "BECAUSE THEY HAVE COOL COSTUMES!!!! LOLOLOLOL"

And half of them don't really get what the story is...they're just in it for the osm costumes and b'aww innocence powers.

I think it's because it's such a long series that shows no sign of ending soon, thus would cost alot more thus making it more of a risk if it flops. Especially since it's not quite as popular as series that do a similar thing, like Bleach or Naruto. If it bombed then it would be a big loss.

And ditto on the VA thing.

Ahhh, I'm in two minds now. On one hand, it would be great to get some fresh blood in the fandom, and maybe this will bring up fanwork activity. On the other hand... God it would suck if all we got were 12-year-old fanbrats who don't have a clue. There's enough badfic in the pit as it is.

But I do echo the sentiment of 'at least it's not VIZ'.

...I have one wish:

Allen gets a British accent.

[identity profile] initials.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
*seconds*

[identity profile] kariavalon.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I seriously don't know how to feel about this... chances are.. I'll be engrossed, puzzled, cry, and well, laugh at its sheer attempts on whatever it has to pull off.

So.. in a sense.. I'm interested (shall watch subs still though haha ;; ) since Hoshino mentioned earlier that the majority of the order uses English as a official language to get thoughts across.

[identity profile] acaida.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I just saw that!! I'm so excited and glad that Funimation got it. I would've killed myself if VIZ got their hands on DGM.

I can't wait for the release!

[identity profile] quatrina.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Goddamn. Not that it wasn't inevitable, but ugh, I was dreading this day. And Funimation too? Sigh.

I just hope CN doesn't get a hold of it, then the fandom's really going to hell.

Wait until they start trying to pronounce ARYSTAR KRORY.

>> I just have to say that . . . I really hope they don't cast Vic as like Allen, or Lavi, OR Kanda or Komui >> XDD >> Since his voice doesn't really change much >> It's like... He has ONE voice and one voice only and after hearing him as Edward Elric that's all you can really picture >> I have trouble listening to him when he's playing Ikkaku from Bleach XDD I just plug my ears and pretend it's someone else >>

Don't get me wrong I LUVER MY SENSEI but >> he doesn't have much voical variation >|

[identity profile] grifstar.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Vic bothers me... he used to be really awesome when FMA was just getting dubbed, but then all the fame and popularity went straight to his head, I think. Unless you're not doing something that stokes his ego, he doesn't really want to say anything to you -.-;. Although I'll admit, he must be an insane guy to have an PUBLIC AIM name like that o__o;

... And yes, he "does" make a good voice actor, but not so well with the voice part. =/ (It's like "... oh, you.... sounds pretty much the same....")

[identity profile] crimsonspiral.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
OH HELL NO.
The fandom is screwed. It's been nice knowing you guys. >.

[identity profile] twikami.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I just hope they don't screw up the voices like they do with most series >.> and that they don't cut out the good parts.... but at least now we can buy the merchandise without having the need to ship it overseas ^-^

[identity profile] sailormac.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think licensing was inevitable, and they definitely could have done worse than Funimation. At least we know that if FMA is any indication, they will put some thought into who they cast for each part, and write a decent script. Hell, Funimation's writers may even be able to improve on the Lulubelle fillers.

Stop being all sensible at a fanwank. :P

Funimation took all D.gray-man vids off youtube? oO;

;_______________;

WTF...I knew this day was going to come...GODGODGOD...

and FUNimation...gaaah~~~~ T___T

...

...are they going to take off all the videos from youtube? ;w;

[identity profile] attaining.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
FUNi has come a long way since Dragon Ball Z... After what Viz did to Death Note, I'm happy they aren't touching DGM.

As someone who really only follows the manga, the influx of anime-only fans into the fandom will be an adjustment. u.u

[identity profile] scrapingskies.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, my immediate reaction was "OHHH NOES" but! Funimation isn't too shabby a licensing company, all things considered. P:

I'm juuust worried if they're NOT going to put it on Adult Swim. They probably won't, since little boys love fighting and magic glowy weapons and all that jazz, and this equates to a whole lot of butcheringcensoring :/

And, the new load that'll come into fandom. Ohhboy.

[identity profile] kkamagwi.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm having trouble imagining D. Gray-man aired for kids to watch. It has way too much religious content.

Which would indeed result in a whole lotta butchering if it is aired as a kid's program.

Hopefully it will get more people to read the manga, anyway.

[identity profile] sakanagi.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, excellent!

[identity profile] fidchell.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm being really hopeful about it. Hoshino Katsura said that the official spoken language in D.Gray-man is English, so it'll be really interesting to hear how that would be handled. I just hope they hire decent actors and make Allen not sound like a 10-year old girl on helium anymore.

Granted, I already have a strong idea of which American VA's would be perfect for D.Gray-man. I hope they won't ruin my hopes. ;_;

[identity profile] su-dama.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
I vote for fucking accents.

The right kind.

I feel like there's no hope, though. LOL.

[identity profile] absentaserpis.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be made of win.

But considering many dub companies have had the chance before and failed to deliver I would not be optimistic.

Which is kind of sad because I would expect dialects to be a very important aspect of a voice actors repertoire.

[identity profile] mightyironlung.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Goodbye fandom. ;O;

[identity profile] eien-no-kaze.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
Just one thing.

I can't watch it on crunchyroll anymore.

[identity profile] puddingtreat.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not too surprised, I just hope they don't end up ruining the series with bad voice-acting and cencored. It would suck for all the blood and the cigarettes to be cencored out!

Tyki without a cigarette = WTF

[identity profile] initials.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Tyki without a cigarette = WTF"

So wrong.
