Former events and recent events discussion

It is pretty much obvious that D.Gray-Man's manga is reaching its end, especially taking in consideration what has taken place in the latest chapter and all the jazz that has been played so far.

Well, today, after overdosing myself with ice-cream to lose coherence to make some indecent fanfiction, I recalled a few things that took place long ago in the manga and tried to sort out some things of the recent chapter.

I recall that at some point of the manga, near the attack of the Headquarters and when the Akuma level 4 showed up, our adorable evil mustache man, Leverrier told Hevlaska she was a "kinslayer", that she had destroyed her own kin.

Was it mentioned how she killed them or why?

I recall as well that at Timothy's arch a level 4 akuma showed up. Weren't they rare and never existed one before? Why suddenly there were more?

In the spanish side of this fandom, long ago, a great fanfiction author said that it was obvious that the 14th was Allen and that he was going to steal the Earl's position. If anyone sees her, because she hasn't updated that much, ask her if she is not Hoshino or something. She guessed it last year, more or less in April.

Anyways, considering that Allen is "The destroyer of time" and that Kanda sees a clock, it might be possible that the loved person (if you are a fangirl of their pairing, love in a couple like way; if you are not a fangirl of that pairing, love in a friends like way) Allen might end killing will be Kanda.

But why does Kanda see lotus flowers everywhere? Do you have any theory about it? Is Alma trying to tell him something or is a side effect of being an experiment?

Although Cross was shot and presumed to be dead, his body was never found. There's a chance he might be alive. If he was alive, do you think he would show up afterwards in the upcoming chapters?

Also, if you have any theories about the latest chapter's late pages or the chapter overall it would be nice to hear them (I love theories <3).

And has anyone seen that robot that used to pop up every now and then at the beginning of the manga? I kind of miss that guy too.

My sincere apologies for all the grammatical horrors (awful language barriers) and the sheer amount of silliness

(my god I don't want DGM to end.... but I know what happens in the end at the same time. I feelz conflicted.)

I don't believe it was ever mentioned how or why Hevlaska destroyed her own kin. I don't think that what exactly Hevlaska is (besides being some sort of Exorcist) has been revealed yet either. (feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken).
Hevlaska is so big and all, and she seems unable to move from that one spot... I wonder if it all began with some sort of several "little Hevlaska-like" beings... and then one of them absorbed the rest and grew and became Hevlaska? (does this even sound plausible? I'd never thought about Hevlaska before, I just came up with this right now...)

Considering the level 4s, and even level 3s and 2s, I think the whole thing is a bit strange. I mean, at the beginning of DGM, during the Doll arc, I think it was the first time the Exorcists met a level 2... or at least it was Allen's first time meeting one (again, correct me if I'm mistaken!) which is kinda weird: after all that travelling with Cross, all they found were Level 1s? Then Level 3s appeared, and everyone was in an uproar about how "oooh, Akumas with a higher level!" and then the whole thing with the level 4 akuma. How can all these new, higher levelled akumas only appear now if this war has been going on for such a really long time? How come they only start evolving now if akumas have existed for years?

To me, the only thing that could explain this would be if all the higher levelled akumas have been being kept in Japan, and so even level 4s have existed for a really long time, only no one has known about it. I guess it could explain how all of a sudden there are a bunch of level 4s that seem to have appeared out of nowhere.

wow, someone who guess about Allen and the 14th and the 14th's intentions?? wow.

Allen killing Kanda? Hmmm. I think that is possible, but not because of that theory. I support the whole [Millenium Earl = "time"] + [Allen="destroyer of time"] = [Allen kills Earl] theory... so if Allen happens to kill Kanda, it will be because the 14th considers Kanda a threat, or because Kanda goes berserk and tries to kill someone from the Order and Allen has to stop him.

After reading this new chapter, I still don't have a proper theory about Kanda and the tattoo and the lotus flowers...
First, I've always thought that Kanda (and more recently, Alma) were normal children the Order picked up and experimented on. Even when lots of people were going on about how Kanda was "an artificially created human" I still agreed with the people that believed that he was just a normal human with a bunch of experiments on top. After chap. 188, I began seriously doubting that conviction of mine, but after this new chapter 189 I think I'm back to believing he was a normal human child before the whole trouble with the Order. Then he was just "reborn" as Yuu Kanda, the Artificial Disciple.
Second, I'm not sure if Kanda sees that many lotuses all the time. Maybe it's just that one lotus in his room and then the amount of lotuses he sees depends on, I don't know, how close he is to Alma? Or on how close he is to places where he used to hang out with Alma (as in, he sees more lotuses when he's in the China branch or something...)? Or maybe the number of flowers he sees just varies randomly for no reason?
(...maybe I'm just trying to think of a possibility where Kanda doesn't see every surface around him covered in flowers because that would be depressing and I really don't want poor Kanda to have been suffering that all this time...)

Leverrier told Hevlaska she was a "kinslayer", that she had destroyed her own kin. Was it mentioned how she killed them or why?

It seems fairly certain he was talking about her involvement in the artificial disciple experiments that created all those Fallen Ones -- we were also told somewhere around the same time that one of the Rouvelier family's duties had been to give up many of their own family members as experimental test subjects. I doubt Hevlaska directly killed anyone, but by willingly allowing herself to be used in the experiments, she became complicit. This seems to be why Malcolm hates her so much.

the loved person [...] Allen might end killing will be Kanda.

Fandom seems all set on believing that 大事な人間 refers to only one person, but the Japanese says nothing about singular or plural. I still personally think Cross's intended meaning was more along the lines of "when you turn into a Noah you're going to end up killing people you care about".

[identity profile] hakasha.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)

Now, after seeing Alma, Kanda said that's not him. While I keep hoping that he'll say something like, "I killed him, and his soul's gone, so even though that's his body, the Alma I knew is dead." there's also the possibility that he simply can't remember.
If that's the case, Rhode said something like, "is it because of that woman who made you cut him?"
So maybe (maybe! I'm not sure I like this theory...) that woman is the woman Kanda has been looking for, because she made him attack Alma, and maybe she's responsible for the tattoo and all the lotuses, and she also made him forget about Alma, but he still remembers her and that she did something to him, so Kanda's been looking for her all this time?

Another thing. About who Allen is supposed to kill when he becomes the 14th: I've always been wondering if the person (or people) that would be killed would be people who Allen himself loved (like, people from the Order, fellow Exorcists, someone from his past) or someone who the 14th, now using Allen, loved (and that would mean his Noah relatives). ...After this new chapter, I'm thinking both. If the 14th became the new Earl, he'd create akuma, I suppose? And those akuma would kill the Exorcists and people at the Order, no? And to become the Earl, he'd have to kill the Earl himself and probably quite a few of the other Noahs, no?

And I wonder... what are the 14th's motives to become the Earl? He wants power? He wants control? Or.... he wants to save the world? Since he'd be the one with the power to bring about the destruction of the world, he could choose not to do it and that would be it.

So far, I've always thought that the 14th is the real good guy of the story (if there is one... there's no such thing as a world of black and white; everything is varying shades of gray. It's a matter of whether people are darker or lighter) and both the Order and the Noahs are the bad guys. which would make the 14th's side the rumoured "3rd side of this war"... but now I'm sort of doubting that. Not because of what the 14th said about wanting to become the new Earl, but because of that crazed face he had when he said it. Looks a bit too insane to mean anything good, haha.

I think.... Cross is still alive. Somehow. And if he's still alive, then there's a reason for the whole thing, so he must show up at some point in later chapters.

The robot? You mean Komui's crazy Komurins? I think he's been too busy to worry about creating new versions of Komurin... even though that moment when Allen charms the Komurin into sacrificing itself for them shall forever remain of the most epic moments in DGM for me xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Allen's so sexy he can even seduce robots! xDDDDD

and, huh, guess that's all. if I had any of my facts mistaken, do correct me. and if any of my stupid ideas/theories don't make sense, just go ahead and tell me. xD

I don't think that what exactly Hevlaska is (besides being some sort of Exorcist) has been revealed yet either. (feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken).

It was heavily implied that Hevlaska was probably once human, and a member of the Rouvelier family -- namely, the "holy girl" they first offered up as a sacrifice to the Order.

Ah yes, that makes much more sense. *nods, nods* And what you said about her having been "once human, and a member of the Rouvelier family -- namely, the "holy girl" they first offered up as a sacrifice to the Order." too. Yes, makes things much clearer, thank you. ^^

...Is the manga really heading towards its end now? I mean, I certainly don't see it going on and on, at least not too much longer, but at the same time this really doesn't feel like the start of a final arc to me.

[identity profile] twentyfiveraven.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
About the Level 4 akuma: What happened with the Level 4 seems to be what happened to the preceding levels of akuma--after its initial development it showed up again more frequently. The best theory I can come up with is that after an akuma/akuma evolves naturally and progresses to the next stage, it acts as a catalyst for the Earl to create them more frequently. He does create their -forms- (I believe this was mentioned way back in the Vampire of the Castle arc when Eliade stated that the Earl "made" her, and even before that, the Mana flashbacks). The best analogy I can come up with is one between an original handcraftsman (the akuma naturally evolving) and a factory(The Millennium Earl). If that makes any kind of sense.

As for Kanda's lotus flowers (and the tattoo on his chest as well), I always considered that more symbolic than anything else--I myself thought it was a connotation for a more Eastern religion. I never thought of the flowers themselves as a cue for anything, though I kind of like that theory; I thought of them as yet another indication of Kanda's apparently dwindling lifespan.

Cross is not dead! I...have no proof, other than it is a total trope for the wise mentor to "die" and then come back again and Cross is way too awesome to die ♥ . I do think he anticipated his death, therefore, I think he avoided it. Because. He's that awesome. xD

DO YOU MEAN 65? :O I can't even remember the last time I saw that thing...

While we're discussing how DGM is going to conclude: (T.T)

Did we ever find out what's under Lavi's eyepatch? I could have sworn Hoshino-sensei said that she was going to address that...

[identity profile] bodyline.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. At best it feels like the penultimate arc, but not the end. There's still too much to deal with- aside from the business with the Noah and the Earl and the 14th, there's also Central and CROW and what they're whole business is, Cross and whether he's dead or not, all this stuff with Kanda and Alma needs to get sorted, and assuming they're going to do something with Lavi and Bookman, since there's been hints all over the place that there'd be more on their backstory and possibly we'd see Lavi's Innocence evolve and have to decide if he really wants to be a Bookman...

That. Can't all possibly fit into one arc, can it? Unless of course Hoshino wants to end the series with a ridiculous amount of loose ends.

[identity profile] bodyline.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure it's intentional, though. Up until this chapter and the last, DGM was a weekly release, right? And the last chapter was pretty rushed too, all things considered. It seems more like Hoshino is having to adjust to the pacing style more suitable for a monthly release (and therefore longer chapters) than anything else. It's too early to judge, though. We'll have to wait a few more chapters and see if things slow down at all.

Yep, that was said. Back in the old character bio pages, when it came to Lavi's it was explained that if the manga went on long enough all will be revealed. Which is why I still think we have a bit to go, there seems a whole lot more to explain and learn about.

Or I'll be one really pissed person. I want a Lavi background and conclusion. We still haven't ever been told who the heart is either...

[identity profile] saave.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there are a lot of things left unsaid, like Who is Maria? and How is Cross such a powerful sorcerer?

Why's Mana look similar to the Earl? Derp.

What's up with Lavi? Does he have an eye? What's his real name? CAN WE HAS BACKSTORY PLZ.

D.Gray-Man's losing it's 19th Century charm, and I'm really disappointed.

[identity profile] saave.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Nevermind where the hell is Cross, too.

& It feels like Hoshino's running too fast and screwing up the manga a bit. I mean, I love her - I love it, but it feels as if she could've worked to stabilize this new Arc a bit better. It's sort of getting random, with the comedy and the vague references to "that woman" or "that time" or "that magical place you touched me in" and I'm sad. ): I loved the old school feel from the mid-points in the manga.

It is my theory the Lavi has the Heart of all Innoecnce. Because it's an awesome paradox and would mean much drama when faced with his role as a Bookman.

I am dying to find out about all of the loose ends and see more backstory on Lavi and Kanda (and Lenalee too).

[identity profile] xdark-faex.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
^_^ This is one of my fave theories too.

[identity profile] kayter.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I have that theory myself :)
It would be just fitting if Lavi had the Heart.
Maybe he kinds of need to really accept it in order for it to show its power?

Anyway, glad to find someone who agrees with me. A few months back, when "Who is the heart" was kind of a hot-topic, I mentioned Lavi and everyone disagreed D:
Then I swore that I would laugh at everyone's faces if he turns out to be hahaha
No we can do so together :D

[identity profile] staticraven.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Can I be right there laughing with you? :D That's a theory of mine and a friend of mine's as well. We've been saying it for months. |D She's even nicknamed his Innocence the HEART HAMMAR or something now.

Yes and yes! I've said that despite not being fully devoted to God's cause, he still has a good synch ratio with his Innocence (he's supposed to be playing the part of an exorcist in order to record this war, right? He's not necessarily against the Earl per se). Remember Lenalee complains that before the Crystal evolution, her Dark Boots were always painful and heavy. Lavi said that no matter how large he makes the hammer, it's always light as a feather. Can you imagine what would happen if his Innocence fully activated?

When it happens, I will cackle sinisterly with you. :D

If it is Komui or Johnny (or some other non-exorcist) it would mean that they haven't located the Heart yet, which is still feasible. I really hope it's not Lenalee.

Are the Bookmen human? What special abilities do they posses other than the obvious memory ones? What's the deal with Lavi's eyepatch (does he wear it as part of his observance training? Is he hiding something under there?).

And Kanda. I assume he was some child they picked up off the street and experimented on, but he is Japanese, yes? Isn't Japan overrun with high level akuma? More explanation please!
