This week's chapter was released in a rather odd time. I translated as soon as I realised it was up.

The raw scans look like they've been chucked into water and boiled. The text is rather blurry, so I've translated the best I could.

Bad news: There will be no new chapter next week due to Japan's Golden Week holiday. This chapter is from a 2-week combine issue, 22/23. There is an announcement at the end of this chapter saying there will be D.Gray-man will be on hiatus from issue 24 until further notice. It isn't known if this is the decision of Hoshino-sensie or Shueisha (publisher of the Shounen Jump magazine).

Bak and Kanda know each other personally? Now that I didn't see coming. (Wonder if I should have^^;;;)

This conversation worries me... the one with Bak and Kanda. I'm wondering if Kanda's somehow been infused with something that's cause him to gain inhuman abilities. Or... (and I really hope this one isn't true) Maybe he's not even human at all. If it's the former, who was he before the Order got a hold of him? Or the later... I foresee angst. Lots and lots of it. I can see Allen and Lenalee having a hard time accepting that. Especially Lenalee ;_;

Allen's wavering faith is also disturbing me... that line where he says that he's saying those words like he's protecting them shows that the recent events are finally starting to eat away at his convictions. I hope that isn't true. It would be horrible if after all the hope and inspiration he's given people around him, he ends up loosing those values in the end. (I don't think he will, but... he is a tragic hero figure.)

Though we have known Kanda's name is Japanese, we can't really be sure if he actually came from the Asia branch. So its natural that some of us didn't see it coming.

If the Order has power to create man-made humans, the question would be why not make more exorcists like Kanda. 100 more Kandas and the Earl+Noah will surely be gone (may be). Perhaps it is an expensive investment. Perhaps it breaches too many taboos in the process of doing so.

If the fact that Kanda isn't entirely "human" (what defines a human, anyway?) gets exposed to the rest of the Order, relationships will change for sure. Angst and sympathy from various directions.

Hmm I don't think I picked up anything in Allen's words.

Since they call it the "Artificial Apostle Project", I think it's quite safe to say that Kanda was not originally an Exorcist. I do, however, think he is human :3 Just not a normal human (or at least after the project)

Actually, I was pretty shocked to find out that Bak knows Kanda personally and they would actually have a conversation :D And for Kanda to put up with him and tell him not to apologize, I would have never foresee it :3 But it's a nice kind of shock, and in some way, I'm quite surprised to see that Bak is actually so involved in all of this.

Somehow, there's this gut feeling that Allen (and the Black Order) will eventually break away from the Central. Allen still wants to cling on to hope but he certainly doesn't agree with the way that Central do it :3

I agree with 種. Don't know what I was thinking back there. My mind kicked in the plant meaning of 種 first, I guess.

With ハゲてない, at first I too thought it's 禿げる, but on a second thought, I thought may be it can be a shorted form of はげしい. Hmm, I guess you're right, For is likely to tease Bak that way.

Artificial, man-made is the same thing to me. I suppose artificial sounds better. Don't really have an argument with that. Pressed, pressure, kind of the same...

I think they all are looking more mature as the series progresses. Even Kanda's grown less and less feminine, and Lenalee's starting to look older then previously. But Allen's appearance is definitely the one that's grown the most. I like how his eyes are still boyish, though. They haven't lost their wide eyed touch just yet ^^

Thanks for the translation.. I saw the RAW earlier, and god. Kanda pained expressions is just soooo damn sad for me to see ;_; I'm really glad it's finally (hopefully) focusing on Kanda past, but somehow, I'm a bit afraid.

I LOL at Kanda's "ho shit" expression when Bak broke down and asks Kanda to hit him. Again, fail at human interaction, Kanda has.

There has been a lot of speculation whether Kanda is android or not, which would explain his horribly unsocial behaviour. I believe that, nah, Kanda's a jerk, and will always be. It's his personality. Besides, he has too much determination, strength of will and passionate anger to be an android or cyborg or something. He's definitely human.

Wow, this particular line is very touching. It good to know that Bak sees Kanda as more than just a soldier/pawn, when even Kanda sees himself as one.

Thanks for the translation - there is one thing that intrigues me, what does exactly mean second and third exorcist in the Japanese version? Is it like "the second/third generation of an exorcist" or a "second/third rated exorcist" (meaning: inferior to the real exorcist).
Maybe it's my English, I'm not able to tell the difference from it or maybe I'm seeking more in the meaning than is intended.

In the raw Japanese version, second is simply "sekando", a direct translation to English. Same as third being "saado".

I don't suppose the Order named them second and third because they're inferior to the naturally chosen exorcists. It's just because they're different in nature.

After reading some translations, I think Kanda is still human. They just found some way to artificially insert innocence into him, and it worked exceptionally well, but at the same time, the process was incredibly laden with sin as Kanda seems to have been used as a sacrifice / had to sacrifice something of himself (life span?) to get the process to work. Could it be that he had to give up something of significant importance to the innocence to appease it so it would intergrate with him since he was not chosen by God? Was giving up part of his life span part of it? If so, then Kanda is like a mauder. Though I'm still having a little bit of trouble figuring out where the lotus flower illusion comes into play. Is he cursed afterall, and in turn sees the flowers everywhere? How or who cursed him? Or does the fact that they are just an illusion symbolize that Kanda's existance is artifical as well after all?...Is he just crazy? Although I still think he's human. He just got toyed with and innocence was forced upon him and maybe almost in an abusive way by the Chang and Epstein families using the "dark art" reffered to in chapter 185 in the side text of page 17. It seems the flower illusion caused mental trauma as a child, and then the Chang and Epstein familes might have added a pinch or two of an abusive childhood. At the very least, Hoshino, after 185 chapters, has bestowed upon Kanda a more clear and justifiable reason for why he acts like Antisocial Butt Hole. O_O I might be antisocial butt hole too if I were him.

I actually find Kanda to be very emotional at moments. He makes the same mistake over and over again of trying to keep his feelings bottled up inside too much until he explodes. Though, I suppose his modo is to be stoic to try and stay focused...and he does try. *cough* It's good he's not a girl who PMS's! =D

DGM is kinda fun to analyze sometimes. ^w^ *goes off to bed*

I can't decide whether this makes Kanda's behavior in 8th Night interesting, or inconsistent with Hoshino's later story decisions. Remember, when he was calling the Finders losers who weren't chosen by Innocence? But it seems (to me) that he himself was artificially made a conformer.

Also, see icon. -_- I love sensei, her work is inspired and inspiring. This is my favorite manga, bar none. But Christ, lady, either take a proper break and get healthy or get your act together, this is getting silly. Most people would kill a man to get a manga in "Weekly Jump" at 24. Missing deadlines with them, you'd have to be pregnant, dying, or Togashi Yoshihiro.
