literal translation for Lavi's Innocence?

i'm working the evolution of Lavi's Innocence into my fanfic and i'd like to get a literal translation of "Ōzuchi Kozuchi" for the new name a/o attack purposes.

the D.Gray-man wikia has it as "Ōzuchi Kozuchi" (大槌小槌, Big Hammer, Little Hammer, lit. translation Ootsuti gavel). i put the romanji and kanji through as many translation sites as i could: Kozuchi kept coming up as hammer or gavel, but Ōzuchi/Ootsuti/Otsuchi kept coming as a surname with no definition. though Ōzuchi did get me 'beetle' on one site. so i tried Google and got nothing but articles on the Earthquake. thinking it might be mythological i tried Ōtsuchi in wikipedia and that said it's a large wooden hammer with a shaft of about 6 feet; was mainly used for forcible entry through castle gates and doors.

is the name of Lavi's Innocence really just 'Hammer Hammer'?

p.s. oh, and the romanji for the Water and Earth seals would be much appreciated. ^^

The name of Lavi's Innocence is actually just "Iron Hammer", but he doesn't use it because it's boring and clinical. He calls it Big Hammer, Little Hammer. The first kanji means "big", the second means "hammer", the third means "small", the fourth is "hammer" again.

I prefer Little Big Hammer because I think it's cuter and more of a nickname. XD

it's kinda like Yojijukugo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yojijukugo ) 槌 or "Zuchi" literary means "Hammer/Mallet", 大 or "Dai/Ooi" means "Big" and 小 "Ko" means "Small" so the literal meaning of 大槌小槌 is "Big Hammer, Small Hammer" if you were to translate the four characters :D

and the romaji of Water is "Sui Ban" and Earth is "Do Ban" if I'm not wrong xD; but I think Lavi only had used Fire "Hi Ban", Wood "Moku Ban" and Heaven "Ten Ban" so I do apologize if there's any mistake since water can also be read as Mizu and earth as Tsuchi but because of the previous seals so I assume he will use Sui and Do ^^

As far as I know--from translations I've read of the fanbook and the manga, and from fan-chatter on LJ and ff.n:

The official name of Lavi's Innocence is Tessei, something like 'metal hammer', which Lavi thought was boring; most of the time he calls it Oozuchi Kozuchi ('big hammer little hammer', as others have mentioned, and possibly also a pun involving those two words 'ootsuchi' and 'gavel'? Lavi seems the type to make terrible puns...). I've also seen it called Nyoibou (Nyoiboo?), or 'size-shifting hammer', although never in canon context, so that might be a fan title.

Thanks, i didn't know about the official name. i agree with the puns, especially considering his nicknames for everybody. everytime i see Nyoibou all i think of is Goku's staff(either title works)

I took copious notes on what translations of the fanbook I could find; it may have been from D.Gray-Divinity, they seem to be pretty reliable. Then I made tables. Lots and lots of tables. Like, first and last names (official spellings) in alphabetical order, and side-by-side charts of height and weight, and nested categories of nationality/ethnicity, and this really complicated monstrosity comparing the weird 'stats' the fanbook included (what the hell does 'flexibility' even mean?), and um I'm a nerd. 8Da

The Google tells me that in general a Nyoibou is a bo staff that can extend to any length, and/or a 'double saber'(?), and that it seems to be popular among D.Gray-fans as a 'title'/name for his Innocence, whereas 'Oozuchi Kozuchi' is more what he yells during the transformation sequence when he's activating it? [/totally doesn't have a crack theory about Lavi sekritly being a magical girl, nosirree]

Wiki said the Ōtsuchi is 6 feet long, some of the pics i'd found looked like they were 7.

*snorts* magical girl.......... just reminded me of Sailor Moon always twirling her wand(?) before doing her attack. maybe that's why Lavi's got his headband, he's trying to hide the tiara. *giggles*

Like the others have said, it is literally big hammer, little hammer. However, I just wanted to tell you that your problem here is that you've been chucking it into online translators, which can be fine for small things but are ultimately not dependable as they are machines.

I'd also advise you to not use romaji when trying to translate things. Many words will have the same romaji, as romaji is just the Japanese word in English letters. It's sort of like two, too, and to--but only worse, because as far as romaji is considered they would all be written the same way. Take kami for example. Depending on the kanji, it could mean God, hair, or paper.

Also, it's been years since I've been up to date with DGM, but I'm pretty sure the seals use onyomi pronunciation.

So in that case it would be 水, sui (water) and 地, chi (earth). Although, as far as the earth one goes, he might use a different word. If it's not that one, it would be 土, do (earth).

thanks for the advice, i always wondered why some would list the same word 4 or 5 times. the onyomi pronunciation makes more sense, one of them looks like chi.

Yeah, yeah, but that's the confusing part, 'cause "mokuban" and "tenban" are using the on readings, but "hiban" is definitely the kun, and agh my brain. @_@ And there're more characters in the ring, just obscured by weird question marks...hopefully we'll learn more about those. Maybe this whole 'lolkidnapping' thing is really a segue into more Bookman/Lavi backstory?

but one of the characters looks like 地, chi. or atleast it does in the crappy screenshot i found. backstory or not, it's definitely gonna make Lavi choose sides.(i think he's gonna turn on the tribe.)
